The Bodleian Library, Oxford
The Bodleian, where Lawrence worked as an Oxford undergraduate, now holds the foremost collection of T. E. Lawrence materials in Britain. This has been accumulated through gift, purchase, and copyright-deposit. In 1988 the library held an exhibition to mark Lawrence's centenary.

On-line

The OLIS printed-book catalogue covers many Oxford University libraries. No manuscript catalogue is available on-line.

Relevant publications:

  • Bodleian Library: T. E. Lawrence: the Legend and the Man, exhibition catalogue (Oxford, Bodleian Library, 1988).
  • Jeremy Wilson, 'T. E. Lawrence Materials at Oxford', Journal of the T. E. Lawrence Society, Oxford, Vol. II, No. 2, Winter 1992-3, (pp. 68-88).
  • Bodleian Library holdings are indicated throughout T. E. Lawrence, a Guide to Printed and Manuscript Materials.

Manuscripts include:

  • Early draft and photographs for Lawrence's Crusader Castles BA thesis (1910), presented by his family.
  • The only surviving page from the second draft of Seven Pillars of Wisdom (1920), presented by Lawrence himself.
  • The earliest complete draft of Seven Pillars of Wisdom (1922-22), presented by Lawrence himself.
  • Lawrence's commonplace-book Minorities (1919-27), bequeathed by Malcolm Escombe.
  • An extensively amended typescript of The Mint (1929-35), purchased.

Letters by Lawrence include:

  • A long series of letters to his family.
  • Letters to A. E. Chambers.
  • Letters to Lionel Curtis (but the majority are at All Souls College).
  • Letters Geoffrey Dawson.
  • Letters to Edward Eliot.
  • Letters to Pierce Joyce.
  • Letters to E. T. Leeds (on deposit).
  • Letters to Sergeant Pugh.

Research archive:

A major archive of material, given to the library by T. E. Lawrence's executors, includes transcripts of letters to and from Lawrence, a collection of photographs, printed books and proofs, and a wealth of background biographical material. This archive, which was released in 2000, has been catalogued and indexed. There is a possibility that the catalogue may become available on-line.

Other relevant archives include, notably, the Lionel Curtis papers.

Printed books include:

  • One of six extant 1922 Oxford Times proofs of Seven Pillars of Wisdom, with manuscript corrections by Lawrence.
  • The 1926 subscribers' edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom and the 1926 American copyright printing.
  • The 1936 American copyright printing of The Mint.
  • All six T. E. Lawrence titles printed by the Corvinus Press.
  • Almost all the English first editions, and most American first editions, of works by and about Lawrence, and a substantial bibliographical collection of later printings.
  • A number of proof copies.
  • A large number of foreign-language books about Lawrence and translations of his works.

Through its English copyright-deposit status, the Bodleian is one of the outstanding British research libraries, holding a very large range of printed background material such as autobiographies by Lawrence's friends and acquaintances.
